What is a Forage Harvester?

A forage harvester, often referred to as a silage harvester, is a piece of agricultural machinery designed for harvesting various types of crops to be converted into livestock feed known as silage. Unlike combine harvesters that collect dry grain, forage harvesters are built to chop the entire plant—including the stalk, leaves, and, if present, the grain head—into small, uniform pieces. The fundamental working principle of all forage harvesters involves a series of steps: gathering the crop, feeding it into a cutting mechanism, chopping it to a specific length, and then discharging the chopped material into a trailing wagon or truck.
