What is a Forage Harvester

What is a Forage Harvester?

A forage harvester, often referred to as a silage harvester, is a piece of agricultural machinery designed for harvesting various types of crops to be converted into livestock feed known as silage. Unlike combine harvesters that collect dry grain, forage harvesters are built to chop the entire plant—including the stalk, leaves, and, if present, the grain head—into small, uniform pieces. This chopped material is then stored in silos or pits where it undergoes fermentation, a process that preserves its nutritional value for extended periods.

The primary purpose of a forage harvester is to prepare feed that is both digestible and nutritious for animals like cattle and sheep. The machine is a key component in the silage-making process, enabling farmers to efficiently harvest and process large volumes of forage crops. The most common crops harvested with this machine include corn, grasses, legumes like alfalfa, and sorghum.

Forage harvesters are typically classified into two main types based on their design and power source: self-propelled and pulled, or tractor-mounted, models.

Self-propelled forage harvesters are large, powerful machines with their own engine and cab. They are built for high-capacity harvesting on large farms. Operating similarly to a combine harvester, they can move through fields at a consistent speed and are equipped with advanced features for monitoring and adjusting the chop quality.

Pulled forage harvesters are units that are towed behind a tractor. The harvester's mechanisms are powered by the tractor's Power Take-Off (PTO) shaft. These models are a common choice for smaller to medium-sized farms due to their lower initial investment and versatility, as the same tractor can be used for multiple tasks.

The fundamental working principle of all forage harvesters involves a series of steps: gathering the crop, feeding it into a cutting mechanism, chopping it to a specific length, and then discharging the chopped material into a trailing wagon or truck. The core chopping mechanism is located inside the machine and is central to its performance. Regardless of the type, the forage harvester plays a vital role in modern livestock farming by providing a means to efficiently produce high-quality preserved feed.
